10 free tools every school coder should use
On this page12 sections

Your child does not need a paid course or an expensive laptop to start coding seriously. These ten free tools, from the editor professionals use to a student pack worth thousands, cover the entire journey from first block to first deployed app.

Everything on this list costs ₹0

Parents often assume serious coding needs serious spending. It doesn't. Every tool below is free for students, works on a basic Windows or Mac laptop, and is used at CodeMasti in live classes. Start with the first three and add the rest as your child grows.

1. Scratch (Class 5–7)

Block-based programming from MIT. Students snap together logic like Lego and see the result instantly. It teaches sequences, loops and conditions without the frustration of typos. Our SPARK track uses visual blocks for exactly this reason: logic before syntax.

2. Python (Class 6 onward)

Free, readable, and the language of AI. Install it from python.org, or use the beginner-friendly Thonny editor which shows what every variable holds as the program runs. A Class 7 student can write a working quiz game in a week.

3. Visual Studio Code

The editor most professional developers use, and it is free. Once your child moves to text-based code, VS Code with the Python extension is where they should live. BUILDERS students set it up in their second session.

4. GitHub, and the Student Developer Pack

GitHub is where code lives and where recruiters look. Students with a school email or ID can apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack, which bundles free access to paid developer tools and cloud credits. We wrote a full guide: GitHub for students.

5. Google Colab

A notebook that runs Python in the browser, on Google's computers, for free. No installation, and it handles data science and machine learning libraries that would choke an old laptop. INNOVATORS students use it for their first machine-learning models.

6. freeCodeCamp

Thousands of hours of free, project-based lessons in web development and Python, with certificates. Best for self-motivated Class 9–12 students who want extra practice between live classes.

7. Replit (free tier)

Code in the browser and share a live link with a friend or teacher. Useful for quick experiments, group projects, and showing parents what was built without emailing files around.

8. CodeChef and Codeforces

Free competitive-programming platforms with rated contests. Not for beginners, but for a Class 9–12 student who enjoys puzzles they are the fastest way to sharpen problem-solving. Our INNOVATORS track ends with a timed contest for this reason.

9. Figma (free plan)

Every app starts as a sketch. Figma's free plan lets students design screens before they code them, which teaches planning and makes projects look professional in a portfolio.

10. GitHub Pages and Vercel (free hosting)

A project nobody can visit is a screenshot. Both services host a static website for free, so your child's portfolio lives at a real URL. Every BUILDERS project ends with deployment for this reason.

A simple order to introduce them

| Class | Start with | Add next | | --- | --- | --- | | 5–6 | Scratch | Python + Thonny | | 7–8 | Python, VS Code | GitHub, GitHub Pages | | 9–10 | GitHub Student Pack, Replit | freeCodeCamp, Figma | | 11–12 | Colab | CodeChef or Codeforces, Vercel |

The tool that matters most is the routine

None of these replace a weekly rhythm: two short sessions, one small project, one review. Tools make the work possible; the habit makes it stick. If you would like that habit built with live instructors and a batch of 20–25 peers, our live classes start at ₹1,499 a month after a free placement test.
